One goal of the MoPac Improvement Project is to give drivers a reliable option to get to and from downtown Austin without delay. To make it as quick, easy and safe as possible for people to enter and exit the Express Lanes downtown, the project team developed a plan for direct access.
New ramps will be constructed to and from downtown at Cesar Chavez/5th Street to connect to the MoPac Express Lanes. The Johnson Creek Hike and Bike Trail will remain open during construction.
Previously, these downtown connections were planned to bridge over MoPac. As a result of a reevaluation of the design, we are now building these downtown connections under MoPac which will reduce their visual footprint and make them easier to construct. In addition, the connection into downtown will now allow traffic using the southbound exit ramp from the Express Lane to have access to both Cesar Chavez and 5th Street.
